What a party! …

For three and a half fun filled hours, The Special Children's Christmas Parties provide unforgettable experiences for disabled and disadvantaged children at many venues throughout New Zealand.  The events here have been run for the last 13 years and provide a magical day out for children who have terminal illness, are physically impaired, intellectually impaired or come from severely underprivileged circumstances.

Events feature international and local celebrities including sports, television and radio.  The children are treated to a star studded stage show featuring many local, national and international artists.

There are bouncing castles, face painting, merry-go-rounds, petting zoos, pony rides, clowns, dancers, fairies, magicians, hoop shooting contests, bowling alleys, Police and Army displays, etc providing a fantastic day's fun and entertainment.  A great variety of food is also provided to keep their energy up.  On top of all that every child receives 3 to 4 high quality gifts to call their own.

If you are in business and wish to enhance your local image while helping disadvantaged children, have a look at The Special Children's Christmas Parties website: www.sccpnz.co.nz

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth …

The abolition of Gift Duty will change the nature of asset and estate planning.

Whether you should gift or not will depend on your own circumstances.  Decisions that require to be addressed will generally fall under the following headings:
• Identity of beneficiaries
• Residential care subsidy entitlement
• Preservation of rights
• Solvency/Creditor protection
• Relationship property considerations

When you are looking at whether to gift or not, you will need to consider your motives for the trust originally.

It is extremely important to seek advice regarding whether or not to forgive existing (and on-going) debts in whole or part.  Please contact us to discuss your gifting needs.

Get sorted and lower your bill

The way you manage your books and documents can affect your tax preparation bill.

If your books are not well organised or reconciled throughout the year we have to spend more time going through all your data to put it into order.  This of course takes more time and costs you more than you need to pay.  A bookkeeper can help maintain and manage your affairs and will be cheaper for you.

If you do not have a bookkeeper yourself, and want to make sure your figures and files are in good order for year-end and interim tax filing, talk to us about setting up a service to get everything in order and reduce your tax preparation bill.

Open for Business, as usual

Newmarket has again been criticised by some disgruntled people trying to paint a negative image of the retail vacancies situation in the area.  This is hardly helpful in these challenging times for retailers, but not all that is reported in the NZ Herald is correct.

Contrary to what was written, most vacated sites are filled very quickly, eg the former Starbucks, Supre and Kimberleys all have new tenants (Supre to a multinational retailer taking the whole site).  There is plenty of car parking in Newmarket (over 4,000 car parks), with a number of parking buildings and sites throughout the area.

Station Square is to have a new feature coming up (more news to follow next month).

Ashley Church, the Newmarket Business Association general manager, strongly rejects the article and accuses the NZ Herald of "trotting out the same story once every few months" without the checking the facts.

When you come to see us, take the time to check the newly opened stores and cafes in the changing scene of Newmarket.

A last thought … perhaps Rupert Murdoch's people at the News of the World should have reflected on this quote:
"Think much, speak little, write even less"

Do you want to reduce your tax?

Tax Planning is for everyone, not just for the rich.  No one wants to pay tax, but we know it is inevitable.

Bill Gates said that having the best tax professionals before Microsoft became the organisation it is today, was the single most important decision he made to amass his wealth.

If you want to look at reducing your tax bill, let Marley Loft look at the complicated area of tax planning law and put in place the right structures to avoid costly mistakes in the future.

KiwiSaver - Changes Ahead

The changes to be implemented for KiwiSaver have been announced, and the scheme is and will remain a very good retirement savings option.

The three changes are:
• The Member Tax Credit had been cut in half to $521 a year (what other plan offers this?).
• The compulsory contribution rate from 2013 will be lifted from 2% to 3% for employers and employees.
• The employer contribution will be taxable (up until this point that has been tax free).

If you have any questions relating to the upcoming changes, or the scheme as it is, do give us a call to discuss.

Also, to remember, KiwiSaver is the only plan that offers $1,000 from the Government just for joining.

Newmarket for Christchurch

Wilf has become quite attached to his new look and is taking a poll on whether or not to keep the ponytail.  Check out the photo and send us an email on whether to snip or not to snip.

Newmarket is More Than Just Retail And Accountants

I have been observing, from my office window, the battle between the Auckland City Council, the local birds and a heap of grass seed.  Lumsden Green across the road has been struggling to live up to its name for some time since the new landscaping of the park.  After the initial planting the grass gave up, ably assisted by the birds, and the Green resembled the Australian outback.  I am pleased to say that the grass has been coaxed back to life and is once again lush and vibrant.  Take a lunchtime stroll through Lumsden Green.
